Chapter Five
Emily couldn’t help her little flicker of disappointment when only Gus showed up at her door a few hours later, but she quickly squelched it.
It was good that Will wasn’t there.
She was acting like a stupid teenage girl and she needed a chance to get her act together. God, if she told Will what she was thinking and what she thought she was feeling, he would turn and run.
He was twenty-eight. He’d had multiple relationships. He would think she was naïve and silly and dreamy.
And maybe she was. It had only been a few hours and she was already making her and Will into some fairytale.
What feelings of affection and attraction she’d felt for him before had now been multiplied by the day date they’d just had, and that was ridiculous. It was the first time she’d been out with a guy other than Chad. That’s all this was. As far as she knew, she would feel this way with anyone she had a great date with.
Falling for Will was irrational. He just happened to be the first guy to come along who she liked and was comfortable with. She was taking her plethora of emotions—including some panic at being single and not knowing how to be single as well as the occasional question about whether anyone else would ever love her again—and subconsciously talking herself into a new, serious monogamous relationship with the first eligible guy.
And Will really was a great guy. He liked her. He was attracted to her. But he was reacting to the fact that they were friends, traveling together, and that he enjoyed kissing her. He was probably acting like he would in this situation with any girl he liked and was attracted to.
She was making way too big of a deal out of this.
Maybe it would feel hot and tingly and fun and sweet with several guys. She didn’t have enough experience to really know.
And honestly, that would be fun. She liked the hot, tingly, fun sweet stuff. If it could happen over and over again…well, she might come to understand the girls she knew who were serial daters.
That was what this weekend was all about—the kick off to her figuring all this real relationship stuff out as a grown woman rather than as a kid.
She needed to not be naïve. She needed to be smart and rational. She needed to stop looking at relationships from the perspective of a teenage girl. She was twenty-two. She was a business woman. Mature, sophisticated, intelligent. She needed to act it. Or at least try.
“Ready for Bourbon Street?” Gus asked as they headed to the lobby.
“I really am,” she said. She was excited about tonight. She was ready to go out, party, hang out with her friends and see how she felt without Chad. She knew it would feel a little strange, but she was already feeling a sense of freedom that was both scary and liberating at the same time.
“Where are we meeting everyone?”
“Pat O’Brien’s, but not until ten.
